Imperial County came together in a remarkable show of support for students in need at the 5th Annual Golf Fundraiser hosted by the Foundation for Education. Held on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Del Rio Country Club, the event successfully raised funds to provide scholarships for students in alternative education and special education programs across the region.
A total of 104 golfers, forming 26 teams, participated in the highly anticipated scramble-style tournament. Under sunny skies and ideal course conditions, players competed not only for victory but also for a noble cause—helping vulnerable students pursue their academic goals.
Beyond the golf course, the event featured a lively raffle, offering an array of coveted prizes. Attendees had the chance to win restaurant gift certificates, themed gift baskets, and an RC car generously donated by Desert RV, adding an extra layer of excitement to the day.
Throughout the tournament, top-performing teams and individual players were recognized for their outstanding performance. The Garland Team—comprised of John Beltran, Mike Reyla, Anthony Valenzuela, and Armando Valenzuela—emerged as the first-place winners. Following closely, the Sun Community Team, featuring Daniel Paramo, Daniel Paramo Jr., Josh Wise, and Joel Gonzalez Sr., secured second place. Rounding out the top three was the Smith-Kandal Insurance/Real Estate Team, represented by Matt Buckner, Blaise Smith, Josh Fargo, and Dr. Brian Tyson.
In the Closest to the Pin contests, Blaise Smith and Manny Gamez showcased their precision, winning on Holes 3 and 16, respectively. Each received a $100 gift certificate, courtesy of Grasso’s Restaurant and Town Pump/Brownie’s Diner.
Dr. Todd Finnell, County Superintendent of Schools and President of the Foundation for Education, expressed his gratitude for the event’s success. “A huge thank you to our generous sponsors, enthusiastic golfers, and community members for making our 5th Annual Golf Fundraiser a resounding success. This event directly benefits our most vulnerable students, opening doors to education and brighter futures,” he said.
The funds raised from the tournament will support scholarships for high school seniors enrolled in alternative education or continuation schools, students at Imperial Pathways Charter School, and students with disabilities. Eligible students planning to attend a career technical school, community college, or university in the fall are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is April 17, with scholarship awards announced on May 19, 2025.
Building on the momentum of the golf fundraiser, the Foundation for Education is already preparing for its next major event, the Annual Autumn & the Arts Fundraiser. Scheduled for Thursday, October 2, 2025, this celebration will highlight students, the arts, and education, furthering the organization’s mission to support academic opportunities.
