The Imperial Community College District (ICCD) ushered in new leadership during a special Board of Trustees meeting on Friday, December 13, 2024. Trustee Hortencia Armendariz (Area 1) was elected as Board President for the upcoming 2025 term, while newly elected Trustee Peter Martinez (Area 3) and re-elected Trustee Romualdo J. Medina (Area 6) were sworn into office.
The Oath of Office for the trustees was administered by Honorable Judge William D. Quan in a formal ceremony held at the college’s boardroom. Superintendent/President of Imperial Valley College (IVC), Dr. Lennor M. Johnson, praised the board’s collective expertise and commitment to the college’s mission. “The Imperial Community College District is poised for continued growth and excellence under the guidance of its Board of Trustees,” Johnson stated.
Trustee Hortencia Armendariz (Area 1) was unanimously elected as Board President, succeeding outgoing President Trustee Isabel Solis (Area 4). Solis was recognized for her leadership and contributions throughout the past year. Armendariz, known for her advocacy for accessible education and community engagement, will now lead the board’s efforts to strengthen educational opportunities and foster student success.
Romualdo J. Medina (Area 6) was sworn in following his re-election during the November primary. Medina is one of the district’s longest-serving board members, having first joined in 1995. With degrees from Imperial Valley College, San Diego State University, and National University, Medina brings extensive experience in public service and local government. He currently serves as Public Works Director for the City of Brawley and has also held roles as Calipatria City Manager and owner of R.J. Medina Construction. He remains actively involved in community organizations, including the Calipatria Lions Club and Calipatria Chamber of Commerce.
Peter Martinez (Area 3) was sworn in as the newest member of the Board of Trustees, filling the seat previously held by Jerry Hart, who served since December 2007. Martinez, a 29-year resident of Imperial Valley, has a strong background in education and workforce development. He began his career at IVC as an Education Career and Matriculation Coordinator for the TRIO program. He later served as EOPS Director and Academic Senate President at Palo Verde Community College. Martinez currently works as an accounting instructor, inspiring students to pursue careers in business and entrepreneurship. His personal journey, from a migrant farmworker family to earning advanced degrees, reflects his deep understanding of the challenges faced by students and his commitment to bridging education and workforce development.
During the ceremony, ICCD recognized outgoing Trustee Jerry Hart for his 17 years of service. Hart’s leadership played a critical role in shaping the district’s direction and growth. His tenure was marked by initiatives aimed at expanding student access to higher education and strengthening community partnerships.
With a blend of seasoned leadership and fresh perspectives, the ICCD Board of Trustees aims to continue its mission of providing accessible, high-quality education to the Imperial Valley community.
