The Imperial County Transportation Commission (ICTC) has been awarded $12.6 million in funding from the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) as part of the 2024 Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP). This grant will support the development of a new transit facility at the Calexico East Port of Entry (POE), aimed at improving transportation options and infrastructure at this critical cross-border location.
The proposed Intermodal Transportation Center at the Calexico East POE will serve as a hub, integrating multiple modes of transportation, including public transit buses and shuttles. Planned amenities for the center include shade structures, seating, bicycle parking, and comprehensive signage to improve the experience for pedestrians crossing the border. The project will also bring four new zero-emission vehicles to enhance local transit services.
The ICTC-led project will proceed through various stages, including planning, environmental review, design, and construction, with completion targeted for 2030. The first phase, focused on planning, is scheduled to begin in early 2025.
Luis Plancarte, Chairman of the Imperial County Board of Supervisors and ICTC, highlighted the significance of this grant, noting, “The allocation of over $1 billion for public transportation is a critical investment in our communities, helping to reduce travel barriers, enhance sustainability, and support economic growth.” He further emphasized ICTC’s commitment to improving transportation access and safety for Imperial County residents.
“This funding will enhance accessibility and provide vital amenities for our community, supporting a more sustainable transportation system in Imperial County,” said Calexico Mayor Camilo Garcia.
CalSTA Secretary Toks Omishakin commended the project as part of California’s broader initiative to promote sustainable and equitable transit systems statewide, aligned with the state’s zero-emissions objectives.
ICTC expressed its gratitude to CalSTA, Governor Gavin Newsom, Caltrans, the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG), and local partners for their support in advancing this project, anticipated to be a transformative development for the Imperial Valley region.
