On Thursday, November 21, 2024, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Imperial County Superior Court’s Historic Courthouse will be hosting a special community event to commemorate its 100th anniversary. This milestone marks a century of history, service, and dedication to the Imperial Valley community.

The celebration will feature a presentation by keynote speaker, the Honorable Christopher J. Plourd, who will take guests on a journey through the history of the courthouse, highlighting its significance and contributions to the region. As one of the most iconic buildings in Imperial County, the courthouse has served as a hub of justice and governance since its opening in 1924. This event will be a tribute to the building’s architectural beauty and historical importance.

In addition to the informative presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to take part in guided tours of the courthouse. These tours will provide an up-close look at the building’s unique features, including its classic Spanish Revival architecture, historic courtroom spaces, and the many artifacts that showcase the courthouse’s rich past.

For those who enjoy music and culture, a mariachi performance will add a festive touch to the evening. Local musicians will fill the air with traditional melodies, enhancing the celebratory atmosphere

Refreshments will be available throughout the event, giving guests a chance to mingle and enjoy the occasion in a relaxed setting. The event will also feature multiple photo opportunities, allowing attendees to capture memories in front of the historic building.

The event is free and open to the public, and all members of the community are encouraged to attend. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a newcomer, the celebration offers an opportunity to learn about the courthouse’s historical significance and connect with others in the community.

The original Imperial County Courthouse was built in 1908 in the City of El Centro to serve the growing community. However, as the county expanded, a larger facility was needed, leading to the construction of the current courthouse on a five-acre tract of donated land on West Main Street. Completed in 1924, the new courthouse was designed by architects Ralph Emerson Swearingen and Don W. Wells, featuring a blend of Spanish Revival architecture.

In 2010, the courthouse suffered substantial damage from a powerful earthquake that affected much of Imperial County, requiring significant repairs to restore its functionality. Despite these challenges, the courthouse remains a vital center of justice and a historic landmark in the region.
