A tragic three-vehicle collision on Highway 111 near McCabe Road on the night of December 21, 2024, resulted in one fatality and caused extensive road closures. The accident occurred at approximately 9:06 p.m., involving three vehicles, one of which was engulfed in flames.
Emergency services, including the California Highway Patrol (CHP), Imperial County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO), fire departments, and AMR Medical, responded promptly to the scene. Initial reports indicated two injuries and a flipped vehicle. One of the vehicles was fully engulfed in flames upon arrival.
The southbound lanes of Highway 111 were closed entirely as responders worked to contain the fire, assist the injured, and investigate the crash. Traffic was diverted at Ross Road, with additional closures implemented on Interstate 8 to prevent further congestion. Firefighters extinguished the flames, and a coroner was called to the scene at approximately 9:56 p.m.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation by CHP. Witnesses reported significant traffic backups and delays as authorities worked to clear the area. Tow services were called to remove the damaged vehicles, and Caltrans assisted with the hard closures, ensuring the safety of those on-site. Further updates, including the identity of the deceased, will be released once next-of-kin notifications have been made.
