Fire departments across Imperial Valley have joined a multi-agency task force to combat the Border 2 Fire, which has burned approximately 5,300 acres in San Diego County. The fire, which began on January 23, 2025, near Otay Mesa, has prompted a robust regional response due to its rapid spread and threats to nearby communities.
Imperial Valley agencies, including the Holtville Fire Department, El Centro Fire Department, Brawley Fire Department, Morongo Fire, Viejas Fire, and the Imperial County Fire Department, have mobilized personnel and equipment to assist CAL FIRE and other local partners in containing the blaze.
Fire Chief David Lantzer of the Imperial County Fire Department emphasized the importance of mutual aid agreements in the effort. “The collaborative spirit and dedication of our Imperial Valley fire agencies highlight the strength of our region’s mutual aid agreements,” Lantzer said. “We stand ready to assist our neighbors in San Diego County with highly skilled personnel and resources to bring this fire under control.”
Imperial Valley’s contributions to the containment efforts include four Type-6 off-road fire engines, one water tender, and personnel trained in wildland firefighting, structure defense, and emergency operations. These resources have been strategically deployed to protect life, property, and critical infrastructure while ensuring the safety of first responders.
The Border 2 Fire is currently 10% contained as crews work in challenging conditions, including rugged terrain and high winds. Local officials are urging residents to remain vigilant and stay informed through CAL FIRE’s updates and emergency broadcasts.
Despite committing significant resources to assist San Diego County, the Imperial County Fire Department has ensured that local stations remain fully staffed, maintaining uninterrupted emergency services for Imperial Valley communities.
