El Centro police officers arrested a suspect following a stolen vehicle investigation that led to a short vehicle pursuit and a SWAT response in El Centro, authorities stated in a press release.

According to the El Centro Police Department, officers responded earlier to the area of Third Street and Commercial Avenue after receiving a report of a recently stolen vehicle. The reporting party, who was following the vehicle, provided dispatchers with updates on its location and advised the vehicle was last seen traveling eastbound on Villa Road.

Officers located the stolen vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver failed to yield, resulting in a brief pursuit that ended in the area of East Cruickshank Street. Police said the suspect then fled on foot into a nearby residence, where he barricaded himself inside.

The El Centro Police Department requested assistance from the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office, Imperial Police Department, and California Highway Patrol to establish a perimeter around the residence.

During the incident, a resident informed officers the suspect may have had access to firearms. Due to the potential safety risk, the department activated its SWAT team. Detectives from the Investigations Bureau obtained a search warrant authorizing officers to enter the residence.

Police said officers made multiple announcements and provided the suspect with several opportunities to surrender peacefully, but he did not respond. Officers, along with a California Highway Patrol K-9 team, then approached the residence.

After breaching the front door, officers located the suspect inside and took him into custody without further incident. He was later booked into the Imperial County Jail on multiple felony charges.

The El Centro Police Department thanked assisting agencies for their support, stating that the coordinated response helped bring the incident to a safe conclusion. The investigation remains ongoing.
