A narcotics detection K-9 from the El Centro Police Department assisted Imperial police officers during a traffic stop that resulted in the seizure of suspected methamphetamine, fentanyl, and cash, authorities said.
On Aug. 2, the Imperial Police Department conducted a traffic stop and requested assistance from a narcotics detection K-9 as part of the investigation.
El Centro Police Department K-9 Vader responded to the request and conducted a free-air sniff around the vehicle. According to police, Vader positively alerted to the presence of narcotics inside the vehicle, providing officers with probable cause to search.
During the subsequent search, officers located approximately 65.2 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 0.6 grams of suspected fentanyl and $455 in U.S. currency, authorities said.
The suspected drugs were seized as evidence, and the investigation was handled by officers from the Imperial and El Centro police departments. Additional details regarding the driver, charges, or possible arrests were not immediately released.
The El Centro Police Department highlighted the role of interagency cooperation in addressing illegal narcotics throughout the Imperial Valley, emphasizing that partnerships among local law enforcement agencies help improve public safety.
“We are proud to assist our law enforcement partners in keeping dangerous drugs off the streets of the Imperial Valley,” the department said in a statement. “Strong partnerships and teamwork continue to make our communities safer.”
Police also recognized K-9 Vader and the officers involved for their work during the operation.
Law enforcement agencies throughout the region regularly collaborate through specialized resources, including K-9 units, to assist with narcotics investigations, traffic enforcement operations and other public safety efforts. Authorities encourage residents to report suspected illegal activity to local police departments.
