The El Centro Police Department has received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to expand traffic enforcement and education programs aimed at reducing serious injuries and fatalities on local roadways.

The funding will support increased enforcement targeting impaired driving, distracted driving, speeding, and other traffic violations, along with community education initiatives and specialized officer training.

“We are grateful to receive this grant, which will strengthen our traffic enforcement efforts and improve road safety,” Sgt. Daniel Crankshaw said in a statement. “Through a combination of education and enforcement efforts, our goal is to reduce dangerous driving behaviors, prevent crashes, and make our roads safer for everyone.”

Under the program, officers will conduct DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols to identify impaired drivers. Additional enforcement operations will focus on violations of California’s hands-free cellphone law, speeding, red-light violations, failure to yield, and unsafe lane changes.

The department also plans to increase enforcement efforts intended to protect pedestrians and bicyclists, who face heightened risks in traffic collisions.

Other activities will include community traffic safety presentations and coordinated enforcement operations with neighboring law enforcement agencies.

The grant will also fund specialized training for officers in identifying drivers impaired by alcohol or drugs. Training programs include Standardized Field Sobriety Testing, Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement, and Drug Recognition Expert certification.

According to the department, the initiatives are intended to address dangerous driving behaviors through a combination of enforcement, education, and regional cooperation.

The grant program will continue through September 2027.

Funding is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The department encouraged motorists to follow traffic laws, avoid distractions, observe posted speed limits, and refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
