The California Highway Patrol El Centro Area will begin operations at a new facility Monday, Aug. 24, ending more than seven decades of service from its longtime location on Highway 86 in Imperial.

The new facility, located at 2802 S. 4th St. in El Centro, will serve as a central hub for CHP highway safety operations in Imperial County. The building also houses the El Centro Communications Center, which manages regional dispatch operations.

The CHP El Centro Area has operated from its facility at 2331 Highway 86 in Imperial since the 1950s. Over the decades, the site has been used by generations of CHP officers and employees serving communities throughout the Imperial Valley.

The move represents a transition for the agency as it leaves a facility associated with decades of local CHP history and begins operations at a new location designed to support its current needs.

CHP officials said the change in location will not affect the agency’s commitment to providing safety, service and security to the communities it serves.

The new facility has already begun serving as a workplace for CHP officers and staff. Captain Ernesto Ruedas recently conducted the first briefing inside the new office, joined by officers and employees who attended the inaugural briefing.

The briefing marked one of the first official activities inside the new facility as the El Centro Area prepares to transition its operations.

The CHP El Centro Area Office Replacement Project was designed as part of a statewide effort to modernize aging California Highway Patrol facilities and upgrade field infrastructure. The new facility spans more than 40,000 square feet, replacing the existing building constructed in 1966. The project includes modern vehicle service bays, a 148-foot communications tower, an on-site fuel island with storage tanks, and an emergency generator system.

The replacement facility also provides expanded workspace and larger secured parking areas to accommodate the area office’s growing fleet and workforce. The improvements are intended to provide updated operational space and infrastructure for the CHP El Centro Area Office and support its ongoing highway safety and law enforcement operations in the Imperial Valley.

The CHP’s El Centro Area Office phone number, (760) 312-1800, will remain unchanged following the move. Regular office hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The office will be closed Saturdays and Sundays. An official public open house for the new facility is planned for October 2026.
