The streets of downtown El Centro came alive with festive spirit as the 78th Annual El Centro Christmas Parade took place on Saturday, December 7, 2024. Families, friends, and community members gathered along the parade route to witness a display of holiday-themed floats, marching bands, and community organizations spreading Christmas cheer. This year’s theme is “Christmas Traditions Around the World,” celebrating the diverse ways that cultures around the globe honor the holiday season.

This year’s parade honored Carla Kuhns as Grand Marshal and Alex Cardenas as Honorary Grand Marshal, both recognized for their outstanding community involvement and dedication to local causes.

During its Annual Dinner on September 20, 2024, the Imperial Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce announced Kuhns as the recipient of the prestigious 2024 Duflock Award. This honor recognizes individuals who exemplify the Chamber’s mission to support local business, provide economic leadership, and foster community pride, all aimed at promoting growth, prosperity, and an enhanced quality of life in El Centro and the surrounding region.

As part of the recognition, the Duflock Award recipient also serves as the Grand Marshal of the El Centro Christmas Parade, a role Kuhns fulfilled

The parade was organized by the Imperial Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce, Los Vigilantes, and the City of El Centro, showcasing the region’s collaborative holiday spirit. This year’s parade featured 146 entries from across the Imperial Valley, with participation from groups spanning Westmorland to Calexico and points in between.

The event began with the Central Union High School Marching Band proudly leading the way down Main Street, filling the air with vibrant tunes that inspired city pride. Two hours later parade culminated in a grand finale as Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus waved to the crowd from atop a fire engine, delighting children and adults alike.

“It’s really nice to see my daughter out there with her school,” said Janet Lopez, a parent who attended the El Centro Christmas Parade to watch her daughter perform with he school. “She was so excited.”

The Imperial Valley’s high school marching bands showcased their musical talents, playing classic holiday carols and lively drum cadences. Dance troupes and youth organizations added energy and excitement with choreographed routines that delighted the audience. Car clubs and local sports teams also joined the festivities, proudly parading in front of their community and family to celebrate the culmination of the year.

The parade festivities continued with a community gathering at Bucklin Park, where attendees enjoyed holiday treats, music, and family-friendly activities and people had the opportunity to take pictures with Santa.
