A fire early Christmas morning destroyed Denny’s in Calexico, a longtime diner that served as a gathering place for residents of the Imperial Valley and neighboring Mexicali, leaving the community without one of its most familiar dining and meeting spots.

According to the Calexico Police Department, officers were dispatched at about 7 a.m. after reports of a structure fire at the restaurant. The blaze spread quickly, and firefighters were unable to save the building, which was ultimately consumed by the fire. Authorities said no injuries or casualties were reported.

Because the fire occurred on Christmas Day, traffic in the area was light. Police closed access to Cole Road as firefighters worked to secure the scene and allow emergency responders, including the Imperial County Fire Department, to assist local crews. The Imperial Irrigation District also responded to the scene to address utility-related concerns during the emergency.

Firefighters remained on scene for several hours as flames and heavy smoke continued to rise from the structure. The cause of the fire has not been determined, and officials said an investigation will be conducted to determine how the fire started. Calexico Police Chief Armando Orozco was on scene as first responders worked to contain the fire and ensure public safety.

The loss of the diner was significant for Calexico, a city with limited dining and event options. For decades, Denny’s s in Calexico functioned as more than a restaurant, serving as a central meeting place for families, civic groups, and community organizations. The diner frequently hosted family reunions, baby showers, wedding-related gatherings, and informal community meetings.

The restaurant was also the longtime host of the Calexico Police Department’s annual “Kids and Badges” event. The most recent event, held shortly before the fire, brought children together for breakfast with police officers, then took them to a local Walmart to purchase toys. The program was designed to build positive relationships between law enforcement and local youth and traditionally began at the diner.

The Rotary Club of Calexico held its weekly meetings at Denny’s, using the location as a regular gathering space for civic discussions, service planning, and community outreach efforts.
