A 41-year-old San Diego man was arrested in connection with a robbery at a Brawley credit union after authorities located him at an Interstate 8 rest area, according to the Brawley Police Department.
Officers responded about 9:13 a.m. Sept. 29 to Corazo Credit Union following a report of a robbery in progress. Police said the suspect had left the area in a gray sedan with an undisclosed amount of money before officers arrived.
The FBI was contacted to assist with the investigation.
With assistance from the El Centro Police Department, investigators identified a possible suspect vehicle as a gray Nissan Sentra with Michigan license plates that was last seen traveling west on Interstate 8, police said. The information was provided to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officers later located the vehicle and a man identified as Asim Shakir Daniels, 41, of San Diego at the Buckman Springs rest area along Interstate 8.
Brawley police investigators and FBI agents responded to the rest area to continue the investigation. Police said Daniels was taken into custody based on evidence gathered during the investigation. Authorities did not provide additional details about the evidence.
Daniels was transported to the Brawley Police Department and turned over to the FBI for further investigation. He was later booked into the federal detention facility in El Centro, according to police.
In a press release, Corazo Credit Union thanked the Brawley Police Department, FBI, El Centro Police Department, California Highway Patrol and U.S. Border Patrol for their response and coordination following the robbery.
No physical injuries were reported and Corazo Credit Union thanked its employees, members, and community for their support.
“We want to express our heartfelt appreciation to the law enforcement agencies that responded quickly and worked together to bring this situation to a resolution,” said Fidel Gonzalez, President/CEO of Corazo Credit Union. “The safety of our employees and members is always our top priority. We are proud of our team for their professionalism during a difficult situation and grateful for the support we have received from our community.”
The credit union stated that it is cooperating with law enforcement and will defer additional questions about the incident to authorities as the investigation continues.
