The El Centro Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint on Sept. 12 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Imperial Avenue and Holt Avenue.

Police said checkpoint locations are chosen based on data showing impaired driving-related crashes. The goal is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

The department reminded the public that impairment can be caused by alcohol, prescription medication, over-the-counter drugs or marijuana. Driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.

A first-time DUI conviction can cost drivers about $13,500 in fines and penalties and result in a suspended license, officials said.

The DUI checkpoint program is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The grant provides resources for law enforcement agencies across the state to carry out operations aimed at reducing impaired driving, increasing awareness about its dangers, and preventing crashes before they happen.

Officials say the program is vital to improving roadway safety, as impaired driving remains a leading cause of injury and fatal collisions in California. By supporting checkpoints, the program not only holds drivers accountable but also serves as a deterrent, reminding the public that driving under the influence carries serious legal and financial consequences.
