After years of challenges, promises, and a determined effort to rehabilitate, Fire Station #2 on the west side of Calexico has officially reopened and is back to serve the residents of the west side of Calexico. Interim City Manager and Acting Fire Chief Juan Contreras provided insight into the station’s long journey back to operation, underscoring its significance for the community.

The station had been out of service for over two years due to severe safety concerns. “We had issues with roof leaks that caused water damage in the kitchen, restrooms, and bedroom areas,” said Contreras. “Over time, this led to mold and deteriorating conditions that prompted OSHA to shut down the station.” Additionally, aging cast-iron piping caused recurring problems with gray water, further exacerbating the station’s uninhabitable state.

Efforts to address these problems began in earnest about a year ago, with city officials securing funding from the state, including HCD (Housing and Community Development) and CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) monies. The rehabilitation, which began in the spring, involved bringing the facility up to compliance rather than a complete teardown. The project, completed within seven months, cost approximately $1.8 million.

The station now serves an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 residents on the west side of Calexico, with that number increasing to 25,000 to 30,000 during peak traffic periods, especially around the holidays.

While the reopening is a milestone, Contreras noted there’s still work ahead. “We’re budgeted for 25 personnel but need at least 30 to fully staff both stations. Our focus now is on increasing staffing to meet the community’s needs effectively.”

For residents and first responders alike, the reopening marks a significant step in improving emergency services in Calexico. “This is a facility the west side has needed for years,” Contreras concluded, “and we’re committed to making it work to its full potential.”

Among those celebrating the reopening is Rodolfo Valdez, a retired firefighter who served at the station when it first opened in 1989.

“It is something that was needed. It is needed,” said Valdez, reflecting on the station’s importance. “We’ve been on this site since ’89, I believe. I was part of the fire department, one of the firefighters stationed here at the beginning and until after my retirement. We used to rotate, so yeah, it is very vital that we have this station here on this side.”

Calexico Mayor Camilo Garcia emphasized the importance of the milestone for the entire community.

“This is a joyous occasion because this was a long time in the making,” Garcia stated. “The west side of town really needed this—not just the west side, but the entire community. Everyone was eager to see this project completed, not just for the sake of finishing it, but for what it means to the city, to this side of town, and to the entire community.”

The station’s renovation provides first responders with a modernized facility, allowing them to perform their duties safely and effectively. “The facilities have been remodeled, and they look great,” Garcia noted. “We’re looking forward to maintaining this station as a safe and decent space for our firefighters and staff.”
